Family Night Under the Summer Sky Danielle Golden Giglio

A crowd of over 100 gathered on a July evening for Great South Bay Coalition’s Movie Night in the parking lot of Flo’s Luncheonette in Blue Point.  Families set up beach chairs and spread out blankets in the parking area to view Zootopia on the outside movie screen.  It is the second year Great South Bay Coalition organized this free and fun summer event.
Dorothy Johnson, Director of The Great South Bay Coalition whose mission is to empower our communities to reduce the impact of substance abuse was so thankful to Flo’s for donating their space and also for “Cancelling the Keg”.  Flo’s closed their bar for the evening to support the social host law which is if you have a party and serve alcohol to minors you can be fined.
“It is very important that everyone acknowledges this because if a youth is drinking they are libel to make unhealthy choices. Primary prevent is the best education.”
Suffolk Country Sheriff Officers were also on hand giving tours of their BATMobile (Breath Alcohol Testing), talking to the families and letting kids sit on their rescue quad.
Officer Brian Stoothoff was excited to be in his hometown answering questions about the BATMobile from the kids.  The mobile command vechile allows the sheriff department to cut down the amount of time it takes to process DWI arrests.  There is breath alcohol testing, holding cell and they can transport offenders.  Having it at family event serves as a great deternant since kids see first hand what happens if you are caught driving drunk.
According to Officer Stoothoff, “The most rewarding part of being in law enforcement is really getting in touch with the community.  I feel it is extremely important to build those types of relationships with our members of the community.”
The McCarthy siblings of Bayport were thrilled to be at the movie night.
After taking a tour of the BATMoblie five year old Anniston said, “We ate dinner here and looked at the truck where they put bad guys in.  And now are going to watch a movie.  It’s a lot of fun!”
Her brother Landon, nine years old enjoyed the Sheriff Department being there and could not wait for the movie to start.  “I never watched a movie outside before.  The best part outdoor movie is sometimes you can see the stars.”
Raegan, eight years old was excited to meet up with her friends and said “It is something really fun to do!”
Johnson is glad with the turnout, “It’s a wonderful fun event for the family and they are all very supportive of Great South Bay Coalition.”
There will another Movie Under the Stars with Muppets Most Wanted on August 16 at Flo’s.
