Celebrating and Encouraging the Arts in Bayport Blue Point Schools

By Dr. Meridith Leo

The Society Encouraging the Arts in Bayport Blue Point Schools (SEA-BBS) has been working all year to provide opportunities and events for children of all ages. According to Wendy Clare, President of SEA-BBS, “The mission of SEA-BBS is to provide students with scholarships in the arts – from visual to music, dance to literary. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding artists in grades 5, 8 and 12.” SEA-BBS has been working with students to ensure that their love of the arts, music, and theatre were supported.

Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors Cecily Phua (designated an alternate) and Christopher Cody were recently selected for New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA)All-State musical ensembles. Cecily was chosen for both the piccolo and flute while Christopher was selected for the violin. Due to the current travel restrictions and NY State health guidelines the All State Festival will be a virtual event this year which Christopher will take part in. SEA-BBS is excited to acknowledge these two fine musicians! “Congratulations Cecily and Christopher on this great news; we admire the dedication and hard work needed to achieve this wonderful accomplishment! We are all so proud of you both,” said Deb Schaller an active member of the organization.

In addition to the musical accomplishments of our high school students, many students from James Wilson Young Middle School and Bayport-Blue Point High School were selected into the 2020-20201 SCMEA. Michael Mastrangelo the President of the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association stated that the goal of SCMEA is to, “Support Suffolk County school districts by providing music enrichment experiences for students and professional development for music educators. SCMEA is the county branch of the New York State School Music Association.” Congratulations to the following students for their SCMEA selection in Jazz ensembles: Katie D’Ambrosio - Soprano HS Vocal Jazz, Airlea Deutscher - Soprano HS Vocal Jazz, Sam Stenzinger - Tenor HS Vocal Jazz, Logan Cirone - Bass HS Vocal Jazz, Cole Gibson - Baritone MS Vocal Jazz, Parker Farley - Baritone MS Vocal Jazz, Brendan Mattimore - Trombone MS Instrumental. The Bayport-Blue Point community is proud of these hard-working students!

Through its membership and fundraising efforts, SEA-BBS provides students with scholarships in the visual, music, dance and literary arts. For the past several years, SEA-BBS has provided over $10,000 in scholarships to students in grades 5, 8 and 12.
